Island hopping and trivia?
This past week has been so full-on but so much fun. On Wednesday night I went to trivia at Felons with some friends. We definitely didn’t win (not even close), but it was such a good time. I love how competitive we all get over the most random facts.
Moreton Island Trip
Saturday was an early one . My housing group, Semester in Australia, had a trip to Moreton Island, and we had to leave at 5:45 in the morning to catch the bus downtown. Brutal. We took this giant ferry over that literally drives right up onto the beach, which was wild.
The island itself was beautiful but definitely a little rugged. No paved roads, just sandy tracks, and all the cars and buses are these huge off-road beasts and looked like something out of Mad Max. We went out to the sand dunes for sandboarding, and I gave it a go. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be rushing to do it again, but at least I can say I tried. I ended up with sand in places I didn’t even know sand could get.
After that we went snorkeling at the Tangalooma Wrecks, 14 old ships that were sunk just off the island to form a break wall, which now acts as an artificial reef. It was super cool swimming around them and seeing so many fish. Then we hopped in clear kayaks to paddle over the wrecks and even got to feed giant schools of fish, which was insane. By the end of the day, I was absolutely exhausted.
North Stradbroke Island
On Sunday, a smaller group of us decided we weren’t done with the islands just yet, so we went to North Stradbroke Island. Thankfully, we didn’t have to get up quite as early this time, the ferry left at 9 a.m., which felt like a luxury compared to the day before.
When we got there, there were kangaroos everywhere, just hanging around like deer back home. We even saw a pod of dolphins right off the shore, and since it’s whale season here, we spotted whales from the lookouts too. It was so surreal to see all of that from land.
We finished off the day with a swim and then grabbed ice cream before heading home on the ferry. By the time we got back, we were all completely done for and went straight to bed.
It was a super busy weekend, but honestly one of the best so far. Between trivia, sandboarding, snorkeling, kayaking, dolphins, kangaroos, and whales, I don’t think I could’ve crammed in any more fun if I tried.
